Middletown school board meets to discuss state aid cuts

Thursday night, the Board of Education in Middletown postponed the announcement of its 2010-11 school budget because of the late receipt of state aid figures. The district was dealt another funding blow when state aid numbers for next year showed that the district would not receive an additional $7.2 million in aid, putting the district at a loss of more than $11 million. At the beginning of the month, district officials announced that 36 teachers, 18 paraprofessionals, two administrators, four secretaries and four facilities staffers would be laid off as part of a series of deep cuts needed to close a $4.3 million hole and to keep the proposed tax increase at 2.9 percent. By law, the district must submit budget numbers to the county superintendent by Monday.
