Money scam is stopped in its tracks at Wachovia Bank

Some Wachovia Bank associates in Toms River are being commended for tipping off authorities, to a scam that almost drained a resident’s account. The Ocean County Prosecutor’s senior fraud unit contacted Toms River Police yesterday, as an 86-year-old was withdrawing $1,500 from a bank branch in the Pleasant Plains section under “suspicious circumstances.” The victim had received a call saying he won a lottery, but needed to wire money to Jamaica to claim his one million dollar prize. Officers discovered over a few months, the senior already had wired more than 8-thousand dollars. Working with the Bank and Western Union, Police were able to stop the transaction of funds, and the money was returned to the victim’s account.
