Town fathers cut the Neptune fire district budget

The Neptune Township Committee has cut $46,000 from the failed Fire District 1 budget. Voters defeated the proposed $2,835,550 tax levy in support of a $3,387,433 budget last month. The new $2,789,550 levy will yield a .127 tax rate, down one-tenth of a penny, said municipal clerk Richard Cuttrell. The majority of the cuts came from salary and wage appropriations and fringe benefits, said Councilman James Manning. Another $14,000 was cut from a hydrant rental stipend. But potential overtime and salary increase allotments remained because contracts are still being negotiated, Manning said. The fire district portion of the tax bill for the owner of a home assessed at $241,000, the township average, would be $306, down $4 dollars from the proposed amount.
