Water company customers express dismay about proposed rate hikes

Two public hearings yesterday in Berkeley Township allowed customers of United Water Toms River to comment on proposed rate increases. A few said they can’t afford to pay more while adding they don’t believe the water is safe to drink. The company is asking for a 37 percent hike saying it’ll cover water quality improvements and construction of a new plant on Mule Road. More hearings are scheduled for July in Newark.
The dates are July 6, 9, and 21.
