9/11 Memorial Program

9/11 Memorial Program

Thursday, September 16, 2010
Opening Remarks by Middletown Mayor Gerard P. Scharfenberger

Middletown author V. Thomas Hoban will present a 9/11 Memorial Program at Middletown Main Library on September 16th, at 7:30 p.m.  A life-changing experience near the World Trade Center on September 11th, 2001 inspired Hoban to write a letter of love and appreciation to his family, which became the basis for his newly-published memoir “The Letter.”  Timely and inspiring, the book's premise has universal appeal with elements of romance, adventure, tragedy and healing, and features a specific call to action for its readers. "The Letter" will be available for purchase at the event with a portion of the proceeds benefiting the Families of Freedom Scholarship Fund, which provides educational assistance to financially needy dependents of those killed or permanently disabled as a result of the terrorist attacks.   The program will take place in the library’s Computer Lab.

Middletown Township Public Library is located at 55 New Monmouth Rd, mtpl.org, 732-671-3700 x320.

"Severe Clear" screening on 9-11-10 COUNT BASIE

Red Bank, NJ -The tragic events of September 11, 2001 will be remembered and the memory of Lincroft, New Jersey resident Beth A. Quigley, a victim of the terrorist attack on the World Trade Center, will be honored by a benefit screening of the award-winning documentary "Severe Clear" on September 11, 2010 at Red Bank's Count Basie Theatre. Following the film, there will be a question and answer session with Colts Neck filmmaker and former Marine Corps First Lieutenant Michael Scotti. The event will benefit ReserveAid, the nonprofit organization dedicated to alleviating the emotional and financial burdens placed on the men and women called to active duty, by providing financial support to the service members and their families.

Beth A. Quigley was born in Red Bank and grew up in Lincroft, New Jersey. The daughter of Louella and Gene Quigley and only sibling of Suzanne Quigley Moore, Beth attended St. Leo the Great Elementary School and graduated from Red Bank Catholic High School in 1993. Before graduating from the College of the Holy Cross in 1997, she was recruited by Cantor-Fitzgerald. Beth worked as a NASDAQ trader on the 104th Floor of World Trade Center Tower One and was killed in the September 11 terrorist attacks, just two weeks shy of her 26th birthday.

Filmmaker Scotti made an emotional connection between the loss of his friend Beth Quigley on September 11 and the military mission, and references Beth's memory throughout the film.  "The power of 'Severe Clear' is that it reflects what it feels like to be in combat, creating a shared experience between those who have been in battle and those who have not," according to Scotti, one of Reserve Aid's founding and current board members. "This is very powerful for the loved ones of veterans because that shared experience can help counter feelings of isolation that the veteran may be experiencing."

Theatre doors and cash bar open at 7 p.m. with the film screening beginning at 8 p.m.  The film is rated R.  Benefit tickets priced at $100, $75 and $50 are available at the Count Basie Theatre box office, 99 Monmouth Street, Red Bank, New Jersey and at  the Count Basie Theatre website www.countbasietheatre.org.  The box office telephone is 732.842.9000. For additional event information, please contact Michele McBride at mmcbride@wbjb.org  or visit www.reserveaid.org and click on Events.

New Annual Music Series for September (FREEHOLD)

FREEHOLD BOROUGH, NJ – Rich Gatto, CEO of DowntownFreehold, has announced the launch of a new annual music series for September:  “An Intimate Evening with Legends of Rock.”

This series is a musical event featuring national rock band The Cryers performing with a notable rock music songwriter and performer in a cabaret-style, intimate presentation.

The four-performance series – all on Wednesday evenings starting at 7:30 p.m. -- is as follows:

September 1:  John Ford Coley of England Dan & John Ford Coley:  One half of arguably the best Grammy-nominated pop-rock duo of the 1970s, John Ford Coley, along with his late partner, “England” Dan Seals, recorded sweepingly melodic songs as “Nights are Forever Without You,” “Love Is the Answer,” and more.

September 8:  Terry Sylvester formerly of the Hollies:  Sylvester is a premier ambassador of The British Invasion, the music of which continues to impact and resound with many younger, new bands and artists.  At the age of 16, his band Terry and the Escorts frequently were billed with the Beatles in and around Liverpool; the Beatles handpicked Terry and the Escorts to share the stage for the Fab Four’s final appearance at the Cavern Club on August 3, 1963.  In 1966, Sylvester was asked to jump into the guitarist spot vacated by Ralph Ellis in the Swinging Blue Jeans, which enjoyed a string of hits including “You’re No Good,” “Hippy Hippy Shake,” and “Good Golly Miss Molly.”

September 15:  Chad & Jeremy:  Chad Stuart and Jeremy Clyde are one of the founding duos of melodic folk/pop music. It was Chad’s ability to play Shadow’s “Apache” in its entirety that magnetized Jeremy to meet him while both attended England’s Central School of Speech and Drama.  Their first hit, “Yesterday’s Gone,” reached number 40 a short time after its September 1963 release, prompting the duo to record “Like I Love You Today,” released in 1964.  This was followed by their first full-length album, “Chad & Jeremy Sing For You,” released in the U.K. and soon to spawn the duo’s American Top 10 chartmaker: “A Summer Song,” cementing the young men as unofficial inductees of The British Invasion.

September 29:  Denny Laine of Moody Blues and Paul McCartney & Wings:  Denny Laine, a true troubadour, is considered by rock royalty as a revered musician’s musician – a constant creator and architect of songs. In the early 1960s, the songwriter-singer-guitarist formed Denny and the Diplomats with drummer Bev Bevan who would help form ELO (Electric Light Orchestra). In 1964, Laine then started another band, The Moody Blues, moving on to experiment with the Denny Laine String Band and then Ginger Baker’s Airforce (Baker is best known as the timekeeper for Cream, also featuring Eric Clapton). In 1971, Paul McCartney was seeking to create a new sound and new band and tapped Laine to help form Wings, a band Laine contributed heavily to for its entire duration.

Ocean Grove Camp Meeting Announces Free Shuttle Bus Service to Beach/Main Street

Ocean Grove Camp Meeting Announces Free Shuttle Bus Service to Beach/Main Street
Every Saturday, July 3 to September 4, 2010

The Ocean Grove Camp Meeting Association (OCGMA) is pleased to announce the start of a new free shuttle bus service for the summer of 2010.  The new bus service will connect Ocean Grove’s beach and Main Street with parking lots at the Neptune Midtown School and Early Learning Center on Atkins Avenue, providing hundreds of new parking spaces.

According to Rev. Scott Hoffman, the Chief Administrative Officer for OGCMA, the new shuttle bus will run every Saturday (starting July 3) from 9:00 am until 6:00 pm on a continuous 20 minute loop and make three stops in town on its way to the off-site parking lots: at Broadway and Ocean; Main Avenue & Ocean; and Main Avenue & Pilgrim Pathway.

The shuttle will be flexible in nature and grow to meet increasing ridership throughout the summer. It will begin with off-site parking at the Neptune Mid-Town School lots on Atkins Avenue and expand to other lots as demand dictates. Shuttle bus maps are available in the Camp Meeting office at 54 Pitman Ave, at www.oceangrove.org, and will be widely distributed at the beachfront.

The OGCMA is a non-profit religious organization that founded Ocean Grove. Its mission is to provide opportunities for spiritual birth, growth, and renewal through worship, education, culture, and recreational programs.

The shuttle service is being provided by the Camp Meeting at no cost to the riders or to the taxpayers. Neptune Township is graciously providing school parking lots for beach goers use. The OGCMA is encouraging out of town visitors to take advantage of the convenience of this shuttle service and avoid the need to drive into town.

This is an important message for parents of preschool children, ages 3 to

5 years, as well as parents of migrant or homeless children, ages 3 to 21

years, living in the Tinton Falls School District.

If your child has trouble speaking, seeing, hearing, walking, running or

manipulating small objects, he/she might be experiencing developmental

delays.  Chances are that with early detection, such delays could be

corrected. The Tinton Falls School District Child Study Team can offer help in

evaluating and providing, if eligible, a special education program.
